The Sambuddhathwa Action Committee decides to obtain international help to 2600th Themagul Festival - 16 June 2010

(Colombo, Lankapuvath, June 16) - The decision was made in order to celebrate the 2600th Themagul Festival internationally. The resolution was made at the committee meeting of Sambuddhathwa Action Committee, held at the Prime Minister's Office today (15) morning under the leadership of Prime Minister D. M. Jayaratne. Prime Minister pointed out that the message of Dhamma can be spread across the world by celebrating the Themagul Festival internationally. Prime Minister further stated that it is the intention of the government to revive Buddhist ideals among Sri Lankan expatriates and to build Buddhist temples all around the world.

Steps have been taken to invite all Buddhist Associations' representatives around the world to the International Buddhist Conference, scheduled to be held in Sri Lanka parallel to the Themagul Festival. The coordinating work that is required to make the event a success will be carried out by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Although the United Nations (UN) has proclaimed Vesak Day as an international holiday, it was discussed at the meeting to educate the international community on the importance of implementing this measure practically. The committee also informed the Prime Minister that a programme should be implemented to reclaim the local Buddhist relics that were taken out of the country.

The organisational work performed at the divisional level will make it easier to re-strengthen the temple and the village. Prime Minister further stated that there exists some level of distance between the temple and the village folk; therefore there is a need to materialize the concept of the tank, pagoda, village and the temple.

The Dean of Kelaniya Unversity, Rev., Dr. Valamitiyaawe Kusaladhamma, Rev. Divyagala Yasassi, Rev. Brahmanavaththe Seevalee, Rev. Pallegama Hemarathna, reverend monks, were present.
