Education System Should Empower Youth to Win the World - President

(Colombo Lankapuvath June 15) The Educational system should create a younger generation who can win the world and love the Motherland at the same time stated President Mahinda Rajapaksa.

The President made this observation while accepting the report on national policy framework on Higher Education and vocational education from National Education Commission Chairman Prof A.V. Suraweera at the Temple Trees yesterday (14).

President Rajapaksa emphazised the need of providing more facilities to the existing educational institutes and conducting them in a way that would ensure the higher standard of education. He added that promotion of quality in education should be the basis for all recommendations. He said that the education authorities should deviate from opening educational institutes in an ad hoc manner.

Secretary to the President Lalith Weeratunga said that more focus should be paid on the inauguration and promotion of IT and job oriented training courses in the country.

A set of proposals on how the higher education and vocational education policy should be formulated to suit the present situation were forwarded by the Commission through this report. The policy framework was prepared by the Commission based on the extensive dialogue with the members of the academia and the opinions of various stakeholders. The policy on higher education consists of three main segments.

The Commission has forwarded 102 recommendations to uphold the quality, recognition and appraisal of the higher education and vocational education sector. Education Minister Bandula Gunawardena and Youth Affairs Minister Dullas Allahapperuma were among those present.
