National Vesak Week Begins, State Festival at Mahiyangana 24 May 2010 10

(Colombo Lankapuvath May 24) The State festival which marks the beginning of the Vesak festival is to be held at the Mahiyangana Raja Maha Vihara today (24) under the patronage of Prime Minister D M Jayarathne.

Several other events are organized coinciding to the Vesak festival such as Vesak lanterns competition and Vesak Bhakthi Gee programmes while four special Stamps, depicting places of historic importance are to be released.

Apart from the National Vesak Festival, the Sri Dalada Maligawa Vesak Perahera would also be held on Vesak Full Moon Poya with the Golden Casket being taken around a short route.

The presidential secretariat has also organised special celebrations for the national Vesal festival 2010 at Temple Trees and Gangarama Vihara, Hunupitiya while the annual Vesak Perahera of Sri Sambodhi Vihara Colombo will be held on Friday.

Veask Lantern and pandols are being put up Island wide including the Northern Province of the Country, while several vesak lantern competitions are also held.

The Vesak week which begins today will end on the 30th of May 2010.
